James R. Clifton, the founder of the firm, has been an attorney since 1974, but his experience with insurance claims began as a claim representative with The Aetna Casualty and Surety Company where he adjusted a wide variety of casualty and property losses.  In 1974, Mr. Clifton assumed the position of Regional Home Office Counsel for Aetna in Denver.  In 1977, he associated with the law firm of Ellison, Ward & McCrae where he litigated in the firm's insurance defense practice.  In 1981 he began his own firm.

Mr. Clifton has chaired the Colorado Defense Lawyers Workers' Compensation Section, the Colorado Bar Association Insurance Committee, the Colorado Bar Association Interprofessional Committee and  was a member of the governing board of the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association Workers’ Compensation Committee.  Mr. Clifton is a frequent speaker at seminars and programs for lawyers and claim representatives.  He currently litigates both first and third party civil liability cases and workers' compensation cases. 

Mr. Clifton is a member of the Colorado and Mesa County Bar Associations, the Colorado Defense Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel.
